Applied science is the use of the scientific method and established knowledge to achieve practical goals, such as developing new technologies, medical treatments, or industrial processes. Unlike basic science, which focuses on theoretical discovery, applied science is problem-oriented and focuses on utility in the real world.

Primary Branches

Natural science is broadly divided into two main categories, which are further split into specialized disciplines:
  • Life Sciences (Biology): The study of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, and evolution.
    • Botany: Study of plants.
    • Zoology: Study of animals.
    • Microbiology: Study of microscopic organisms.
    • Genetics: Study of genes and heredity.
  • Physical Sciences: The study of non-living systems.
    • Physics: The study of matter, energy, motion, and force.
    • Chemistry: The study of the composition, properties, and reactions of matter.
    • Astronomy: The study of celestial objects and phenomena beyond Earth's atmosphere.
    • Earth Science: The study of the planet Earth, including its atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.
